ART WORK TO BE REVIEWED

Using the taught arts review method, review the above art work by Leonid Afremov

17 comments:

  1. Subject Matter: it represents the beauty of nature. It also describes the joy you can derive in the dark even if it’s scary.
    Artist: Afremov
Title of art work: Alley by the lake
    Size: 24"x36" x 3/4"
    Date: 04/17/2009
    Location: Europe
Technique and Medium: The work was done using original oil on canvas with palette-knife for painting
    Reviewer: OBADOTE ESTHER OLUWABUNMI 09BE08967
Brief Description: The painting describes the natural coolness of the atmosphere just after the rain. It also emphasises the beauty that is in the night, and it’s been shown by the street lights (street lights can only be that bright when it’s dark). It also tells the relationship between the natural and the artificial, i.e., when the weather is getting dark and the streets light are on, it neutrally change the colours of the trees and its leaves. And finally, it speaks the beauty of nature,
Form: It’s a two dimensional work of art showing its depth and through the use of shade, light and shadow, perspectives (the farther you go, the bigger it becomes], horizon or artist eye level (the imaginary line where the earth tends to meet the sky). And it creates an illusion of depth, width and length with no height behind a flat surface.
It also shows the treatment of the effect of light and shade with the tones of the colour which is called chiaroscuro.
    Art Elements:
Line: straight (the pole of the street light), curve (the trees and human),
Shape: angle (across the horizon), circle (the bulb
Light and Value: the colour is even with lots of shade
Colour: the three primary colours (red, yellow and blue) were used and some other cool colours to signify the colour of nature.
Texture and Pattern: the texture can’t be felt, but it has a little bit of pattern which was exhibited with the repetition of the street lights and trees.
Space: there is the use of linear perspective which is clearly shown by the light that passes from the scene through an imaginary angle (the painting). Under this, there is also the foreshortening which is seen in the reduction of the shapes as it gets farther.
There is also the overlapping between the trees and also between the trees and the sky.
    CONCLUSION
The work as said earlier is a very good blend between the nature and the artificial. The colour blend was also excellent. He was able paint the night with a fairly light colour. Although, following his other works, he has indirectly repeated scenes but in a different angle. But I must confess that the illusion the work creates is a very wonderful one. I love it.

  2. ART REVIEW
This picture that is to be reviewed depicts the beauty and harmony of this world as identified by the architect. Quoting the architect he says “I tried different techniques, but I fell in love with painting with oil and palette-knife. Every work of mine is the result of many years of painting; every canvas is born in creative search; every Art work is full of the inner world of mine. Each my painting brings different mood, different colors and emotions. I love to express the Beauty, Harmony and Life of this world in my paintings”. The setting of this artwork is in the evening often and we see that the atmosphere is cool, peaceful and it is moderately cold.
    The artist: Leonid Afremov
The date of publication varies but the most frequent is August 2007
Provenance: it is made in Russia and the audience is the elite due to the nature and interpretation of the art work. It promotes love, friendship, trust and unity. The geographical area varies because most art works are taken museums and art shows.
Location: it is legally owned by Leonid Afremov but it has copyright.
Technique and medium: Different colours are used to bring out the beauty and there is a part where the drawing is sketched manually.
    Line:it is a straight line
Shape: a rectangular shape is created and this is done through the formation of the trees and the lake at the lefthand side which all went on a parallel and rectangular way.
Colour: mixed complimentary, decorative, warm and cool colours is used to present this art in the best way.
Texture and pattern: it is real because if not carefully looked at well they look so real because of the creativity of the architect.
Space: it has different types of perspectives which can give different meaning based on the art lover interpretation.
    Intro.
A male and female is seen walking on a pathway in a city where the street lights are glaring in beautiful colours. The ground is wet and the couple are using a umbrella which signifies that the season is autumn because of the leaves falling off the trees and the drizzling rain. There is also a blue lake beside the pathway which i believe signifies peace.
    Rising action.
This can be seen when the two individuals set out on a journey unknown to the art work lovers and we see them walking down the road. We are sure that it was not a long journey but a short one which we can consider as a stroll.
    Climax
This was achieved when the couple is seen tightly holding themselves and walking on the street, this shows a connection between the individuals and it can be observed that they are lovers.
    Declining action
This can be seen when the individuals are getting to a place where they have done most of the walk and the bush paths were shown which signifies that they will get to their destination soon.
    Conclusion
We can observe from this painting that the couple are coming from a dinner because the lady was still on her stiletto shoes which shows she went outing and the man all corporately dressed for the romantic dinner.

Every artwork is the result of long painting process; every canvas is born during the creative search; every painting is full of my inner world. Each of my paintings brings different moods, colors and emotions. I love to express the beauty, harmony and spirit of this world in my paintings. My heart is completely open to art. Thus, I enjoy creating inspired and beautiful paintings from the bottom of my soul. Each of my artworks reflects my feelings, sensitivity, passion, and the music from my soul. True art is alive and inspired by humanity. I believe that art helps us to be free from aggression and depression

Em... Ok. This is my first attempt at writing an Art Review... The only reviews i tried out prior to this are book, movies and music reviews. So this is... different. So all thanks to Dr. Ekeanyanwu and Miss Ada i get to try this out and who knows, become a professional art reviewer some day...
Leonid Afremov is a professional artist. He paints with palette knife with oil on canvas. Art is his life and he paints every single day because It makes him happy to see people enjoying his art. He was born in city of Vitebsk in 1955. Amazingly enough he was born in the same town as Marc Chagall, the famous artist who also founded the Vitebsk Art School along with Malevich & Kandinsky. He graduated from Vitebsk Art School in 1978 and is one of the elite members. He tried different techniques during his career, but he especially fell in love with painting with oil and palette-knife.
This painting is an example of what he likes to paint about... nature - (that would make him a naturalist) vividly-colored landscapes, cityscapes and figures, and are typically painted using a palette knife and oil paint.
This art work is titled “‘Alley By The Lake’ by Leonid Afremov is indeed b-e-a-utiful!! Ofcourse prior to this i did not know anything about him but then all thanks to google....
It represents portrays lovers taking a walk by a lake. It shows shadows of everything around, and from the looks of the ground, it seems like it just finished raining and the weather is a bit chilly- because it looks like they are wrapped with shawls- which is the perfect atmosphere for lovers to stroll. Only two of them are depicted in the artwork making it seem like they are the only two in the world at this time.
The lines are shaped used are iregular which is amazing because the trees and lights and shapes and sizes in the painting look as if they were just traced out from a still picture.
The technique he used in this painting is stunning making the painting possess an impressionism with an almost 3-D quality-effect. The use of complimentary colors add to the reasons why i think this is a masterpiece. The contrast between dark and light, cool and warm, gloomy and bright to signify the fire and ice effect of love and romance is ... AWESOME!!! This painting has great composition, color, and gives the painting its own character. He used red alot in this painting which ofcourse signifies love.
Seeing this painting alone made me interested and led me to check out his other works among which are Alley of memories to mention a few. Leonid Afremov is a very unique traditional artist
In conclusion, i think this painting reminds its viewers how they hope to be with the ones they claim to love.

General information: The art work to be reviewed is called, “The Alley by the Lake”. A couple is depicted in this work of art taking a walk in an alleyway next to a beautiful lake under a row of street lights on a wet winter’s night.
The genius behind this work is a Belarusian painter named ‘’Leonid Afremov” (born in 1955). He currently resides in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. The actual date of creation of the painting is not well known, but it is said to have been created on the 13th of November, 2007 by the deviant art website. The art work was made in his Playa Del Carmen studio a.This particular work of art has been sold and is currently in Florida, USA. The painting was made on 100% cotton canvas with a palette knife and oil paint. Its size was 40” x 30”.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The work is basically a landscape art work of a couple taking a walk on a rainy winter’s night along a well-lighted alleyway situated next to a lake. The work jumps to live once you look at it; a still rainy cold night with a couple walking down a beautiful lonely alleyway next to glimmering lake under the winter night’s sky. The work is not an abstract depiction of any form but rather seems like a perspective illustration. To the viewer it makes him appreciate the beauty of nature, it gives the feel of love: the couple who share an umbrella walking alone next to a bright lake.
FORM: The work is made on canvas, so it is not a 3-dimensional work of art (sculpture and the likes)… the shapes and forms take shape by the well placed and artistic strokes on canvas made by the artist with a painting knife. He makes the work have a cool color feeling to the public … the use of gold and other colors brings about a perfect even lighting to the portrait. The perspective on the work depicts a gradual yet slow fading away into the depths of the horizon. The use of 100% cotton canvas material was intended to give a feel of realness to eyes that come across it. It also tells the relationship between the natural and the artificial, i.e., when the weather is getting dark and the streets light are on, it neutrally change the colors of the trees and its leaves.
It also shows the treatment of the effect of light and shade with the tones of the color which is called chiaroscuro.
Line: straight (the pole of the street light), curve (the trees and human),
Shape: angle (across the horizon), circle (the bulb
Light and Value: the color is even with lots of shade
Color: the three primary colors (red, yellow and blue) were used and some other cool colours to signify the color of nature.
OPINION AND CONCLUSION: The work is alive with the colors which gives it this air of brilliance, brightness and positivity. Truly the artist is a renowned artist of exceptional taste. I found his work had a shear brilliance and uniqueness to it with all the strokes he made on canvas. Simply put, he is work was stunningly beautiful.

I did fail at my first attempt to speak on an artwork especially an abstract one. But then i said to myself; someone obviously drew this so if the person drew it from the mine, why can’t i be creative enough to decipher the meaning that the person is passing across?
Subject matter: The artist depicts the cool beauty and quietness of the night. Quite peaceful which gives a nice atmosphere for love.
    Artist: Afremov
Date: although there are a number of variations in the date, the most suitable is August 2007
Provenance: this art work exists in very many places which makes it difficult to place the actual location it was made. It is made for lovers who want to enjoy a serene environment and for those who appreciate art work. The art work is owned by Leonid Afremov.
Technique and medium: “Alley by the lake” is made of oil on canvas i.e. it uses oil painting. The artist simply used a palette knife. Its size is 40”x30’’
This art work is unique. It is one in a million. It shows creativity and from the look of it, the artist did not take it really seriously. It looks more of leisure which gives it a relaxed mood. It is an abstraction of his mind painting a calm romantic night.
This work exists on a flat surface and is a two dimensional.
Line: Afremov makes use of straight lines (like the poles), curved (like in the tree branches), horizontal, vertical, thick and thin lines,
Shape: he creates circles which he used for the light bulbs, rectangle which he used a path and a hemisphere which he used a umbrella.
Light and Value: Strong light is used to represent the brightness of the light, the contrasts are evenly blended, there is emphasis on the light and the atmosphere and shade is used to show the shadow of the trees.
Texture and Pattern: it does not imply repeating as it is real and smooth.
Space: there is an overlapping between the couple walking side by side. The woman’s arm interlocked with the man arm.
Time and Motion: The setting looks like evening under a light rain.
There is indeed unity in this art work. Everything blends together and nothing stands on its own. In essence, everything compliments itself as there is balance, adequate emphasis on the scenario which is likewise in tune with the scale and proportion. Afremov’s work is set on a lonely street of calmness and love.
Although everyone can draw, not everyone is an artist. Afremov is an artist who has made good use of his creative mind and has come up with a magnificent piece that will live on for ages. His ability to paint a romantic scene on a lonely night is purely interesting. His use of colours and shades tell a lot. From a glance, you can conclude that love is in the air.

    WOW! What a romantic scene!!!
In my own opinion, I would say that the theme of this beautiful piece of art work is “love” – two lovers walking by a lake under the rain, what else could it possibly be?
The Artist Leonid Afremov, who is one of the elite members of the famous Vitebsk art school, did a very good just with his palette knife - it’s like magic. It may interest you to know that no brush was used to paint this art work; it was just a palette knife, natural oil paint and 100% pure cotton “glossy finish” canvas.
The Title of this art work is “Alley by the lake.” The size is about 8.00" x 5.88.” The art work costs about $15, while the canvas costs about $32 which is about $47 altogether.
It was made on the 17th of April in the year 2009 in Europe.

    Brief Description
The first thing to take not of is the vividness of the paint used. This shows that the environment is usually brighter and more colourful and beautiful because of the light lamps below the trees. The painting however, shows the night time (his is because of the illuminated trees) two lovers walking by the lake in the cool weather just after the rain (this is because both of them are holding an umbrella). The dark blue sky also shows us that it is getting dark and that it just rained in that particular atmosphere. This painting reminds us of how beautiful nature can be if we take out time to study and appreciate it. This work has a linear perspective. This kind of perspective applies to the way objects optically appear to grow smaller as they recede in the distance. The picture plain i.e. the flat surface canvas on which the painting is done has a certain eye level- the horizon (where it is assumed that the sky meets the ground). It is the vanishing point-one can no longer see the walk-way at a certain point. The painting appears to be 2 dimensional (2-D) painting because it is done on a flat surface (plane). It has length and width but it does not have depth. Shades and tones were also used in this painting for light or dark impressions. All the art elements which include lines, colour, texture, shape, size, and space were all used in the process of creating this wonderful work.
In conclusion, this work of art is a brilliant piece by Artist Leonid Afremov and it is highly recommended for those who love nature and appreciate it too.

  8. An art review on Leonid Afremov’s “alley by the lake”
looking at this piece of work without trying to derive meaning, the artwork shows a very beautiful and somewhat playful array of colours. Reading meaning into the art it shows the beauty of nature at all times but at this time, the artist focused on the beauty of nature even in the dark.
Leonid Afremov, born in the year 1955 is one of the most renowned painters worldwide. His masterpiece painting ideas are what he says, inspired by nature. A painter who can boldly say that none of his paintings was done with a brush, rather he prefers to use a palette knife. Afremov graduated from Vitebsk Art School, which was founded by Marc Chagall in 1921 and has had many notable patrons. After discovering that only communist propaganda posters would sell in the Soviet Union, Afremov moved to Israel in 1990. Within two weeks, he had found a job in an advertising agency painting billboards, but on the eve of an exhibition, his studio was broken into and vandalized. After having his art gallery vandalized by orthodox Jews, Leonid moved to the United States. He currently resides in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
this piece of art was created in the year 2009. The artist, just like in the case of most of his other works, made use of oil paint on 100% cotton canvas and a palette knife.
Alley by the lake is one of the artist’s masterpieces. Just like the most, it depicts the beauty of nature, the beautiful play of colours is what is used to make a representation of nature’s beauty. The dark yellow colour is used to represent the leaves of dying trees during the winter season. Some other brown colours still further show the withered leaves during winter. The bright yellow from the street lamps shows light. This explains that it is night time. On the other hand, the cool blue represents the sky and the cool lake beneath it and of course the couple, what better time to take a stroll than a cool beautiful night as such.
Some straight lines were used as in the case of the trees and the street lamps. Curvy and wavy lines were used to represent the tree tops, the lake, the road and the sky.
This work is a must have for ready pockets because I personally can’t think of a better representation of nature than this.

  10. THE REVIEW OF THE ART WORK ALLEY BY THE LAKE
The art piece was done by Leonid Afremov a Belarusian artist and a member of the famous Vietbsk painting school. He is a renowned painter world- wide and his style is unique and exaggerated with the use of plenty colors. What also make him stand out is the fact that in his painting he does not make use of brushes but uses the palette knife on oil canvas. The original, light colored and gentle style that had been worked out for years is his main distinction as an artist.
The alley by the lake is based on the simple idea of displaying nature, showing a couple taking a walk together in the evening under the cool breeze with the river to their right and the trees to their left. The idea of the art is to bring out the beauty of nature with a twist.
The art piece is refreshing and colorful without attempting to be overdone. Even with the exaggerated colors it still maintains simplicity and makes the audience fall in love with it. For me it was a love at first sight experience as I felt the art work beckoning to my natural instinct.
Over the years the art pieces of Leonid Afremov have made him sought after and as one art enthusiast said his paintings are sought after as they are one of a kind pieces making them unique.

  11. The name of this piece is Alley by the Lake. An alley is a path in a garden or park, especially one between bushes and trees. The piece of art presents a lake and an alley beside it with a woman and man strolling under an umbrella. It represents the beauty of nature and what we can do using nature. The name of the artist behind this work of art is Leonid Afremov.
The size of the painting is 24"x30" x 3/4". The exact date the artwork was made is not known. But, we do know that it was created during the 21st Century.
The painting was done on a pure cotton canvas using acrylic. The style is called oil on canvas. Afremov uses acrylic in impasto style for this painting. Impasto is an art technique of applying paint so thickly, that the brush or knife strokes can be seen.
The piece showcases a man and a woman walking on an alley by a lake. The man and woman are walking under an umbrella. There are lampposts by the side of the alley and they are all on. We can see that it is night-time and the atmosphere is very foggy.
This art work is a two-dimensional work of art. Afremov uses the art elements in such a way that each part of the painting complements the others. Different types of lines are used; thin lines, that are depicted in the path; flowing lines, used to create the trees and their branches; implied lines are also used. Different shapes are created, as Afremov deemed fit. Because the setting of the piece is night-time, the atmosphere reflects the cloudy and foggy night-time there usually is during the night.
Afremov’s use of chiaroscuro is impeccable and must be commended as he uses only his palette life to create diversity between light, darkness, shadows and reflections. He does this in a manner so well carried out as the whole painting comes together with his immaculate use of tint, shade and emphasis.
The texture and pattern of the piece was created through the technique used by Afremov. Afremov uses the impasto technique using acrylics in this piece. Through the use of impasto, (which involves applying acrylic so thickly, that the strokes of the palette knife can be seen), the texture and patterns were created. I can imagine, that if the surface of the piece is touched, it will feel rough to the touch owing to the thick paint applied.
Afremov makes good use of space in this piece. The use of perspective in the piece should be commended, as the painting shows a couple strolling away from the observer and the lake and trees are on the sides, going into the ‘vanishing point’.
The principles of design; unity and variety, balance, emphasis, proportion and rhythm are used impeccably in the art work. There are different components of the piece and work well together. Emphasis is placed on the light the lampposts bring forth, as they are the most noticeable part of the painting, and it somewhat changes the mood of the night-time which is dark and foggy. The sizes of the trees work well with the perspective of the piece and the woman and man walking away from the observer.
The painting offers a wide series of interpretations as art usually offers. An alley, as I earlier mentioned, is a path in a garden or park, especially one between bushes and trees. By every lake, there is usually an alley. An alley, where people pass by, take walks on, stroll, sit and fish in the lake. In this particular alley, we see a man and a woman, holding an umbrella and walking. This is to signify that lovers usually frequent this alley. The floor is wet and we see reflections on it; the couple is holding an umbrella, this indicates that it was raining and couple have found refuge under this umbrella in this lonely alley.
I commend Afremov, on a job well done as the painting is exquisite. This is a true wort of art, as it represents so many elements and components. The way the colors are used to show tonal value and to show intensity and the technique used to apply them is truly one to behold.

  13. At first when I saw this painting to be reviewed, I refused to work or look at it, because I decided not to make an attempt with it, because I felt it wasn’t a necessity but on a second thought and look I decided to give it a consideration.
After a second thought and an in-depth look at the painting, I suddenly developed goose pimples WHY? Because of the uniqueness, creativeness and exquisiteness of the painting. It’s actually not easy to come up with an idea of a painting, but I give it to Leonid Afremov, he, for a splendid job well done, I give him thumbs up on this particular job.

  15. OCHEJA, MARIA OJOCHIDE

    Part 1.
Mere looking at this painting, I would have confused it for the fact that a child was just having fun with water colors displayed in some nearby place but the true beauty of this art cannot be over emphasized.
Alley by the Lake is a 24"x36" x 3/4" made in the United States of America; Florida specifically and sold at a cost of $58. The architect behind this work of art is called Leonid Afremov. This work has come in greeting cards, portraits, wall paintings and in mass sizes. The size stated above is the most prominent of his work.
Afremov is known for his talented artistic paintings on canvas with his style of making use of knife, palette and thick paint usually in a style known as Impasto. Some of his paintings include: The Fog of Dreams, Desirable Dreams, Sudden Sparks, Town on the Hill, Foggy Morning, Quiet Sunset, Bottle Jazz, The Loneliness of Night amongst many others of which include: Alley by the lake.
As Realism represents a perfect imitation of life, so does this work of Afremov, “Alley by the Lake”. This work is a representation of the kiss of an after rain leaving behind its debris. A man is seen with a woman working down an aisle that is in the middle of a lake with lamp stones by the right; and some street lights and trees by the left.
Although this painting is not given a specific or speculated date, it is known that it was created in the year 2009 in the month of December in Florida (in the United States of America). This painting is quite peculiar with the people of Florida as it is shown in some of his works as there is an etch or trace of the sun.
    Part 2.
There is a Man accompanying a woman with an umbrella over their heads probably to save them from the drizzling coming down to earth. They walk on this wet aisle with trees and street lights by the left side of the aisle and on the right, there is a lake and some head lamps beside it. At the extreme end of the aisle, one can see a faded picture of the skies and the some houses on a hill.
    Part 3.
Alley by the lake is a 2-dimensional art work because it appears on a flat surface with its Elements beautifully put in place. He uses curved lines on tree branches, head and street lights, and leaves, Afremov also usensityes rectangle, rhizoid, triangular and circular shapes to put things in place.
Afremov puns on Tint, Shade, Emphasis and Values. His work depicts mastery in Chiaroscuro Intensity; I love this birth of a bright-dull effect.
Afremov’s work is happy with colors as there is an even tone of Primary, Secondary, Mixed, Complimentary, Cool and Warm colors. Indeed the composition of colors that has brought the birth of this painting is of high decorative value.
If I were to touch Afremov’s works, they would be rough to touch because of the thickness of the paint and the whole canvas and knife works. This work of art is no different; it is definitely rough to touch as it appears so.
This art work is of symmetrical balance as shown in his positioning of all the various figures around the work.
Indeed I recommend this work for a season of valentine, Christmas, the New Year, feasts in religious places and more. This painting is one for all seasons, it cannot be ignored; its beautification is alarming, the colors used are eye-catching, this work just comes out as a Master piece. I would pat Afremov on the back and say: “You have done well, for you have made the scene come alive”.
