ART WORK REVIEW TITLE OF ART WORK: ALLEY BY THE LAKE Alley by the lake is an art work painting painted by the artist Leonid Afremov, who is originally from Europe. The size of the art work is 24"x36" x 3/4", while the condition is excellent, the medium used in this artwork is oil on canvas the estimated value of the art work is $1,150 and was originally sold for $2,235 while the type of this artwork is Acrylic Painting on Canvas / Giclee. This is original oil on canvas. The artist used only a palette-knife for painting. He did not use a brush in this painting. He used only natural oil paint and 100% pure cotton canvas. In the background the artist made use of the tree and the streetlights and that puddle, he also made use of strokes and complementary colors, combining cold and warm colors and also combined fiery reds and watery coolness which worked perfectly well. This artwork has been sold on the 04/17/2009 therefore not available in the market any more. The dominant colors used in this artwork are black, different shade of blue, brown and yellow The background of this painting is a long stretch of orange trees on the left, and rain and clouds covering the rest. The painting is a landscape painting combining both cool watery by the left side of the artwork and reds comprising of lights and trees at the right side. This artwork is a 2 dimensional piece of art and it is painted on a flat surface, he made used of flowing, straight, angular, vertical lines, thereby creating triangular shapes where all the objects in the artwork met i.e. the lake, the trees, and the road. He made use of both warm and cool colors and created a good combination of both and every thing in the painting suggests to be fading in an angular direction which suggests that the artwork is a flowing piece. We can see the unity of all the element in the artwork pertaining where they all meet thereby creating a balance in the artwork, all the elements in the painting creates rhythms because of how they all blended and combined together. To me this artwork is really a master piece because of his combination of warm and cool colors and his stroke and also been able to combine so many themes into one and also nice and balanced colors which makes the scene come alive and I also think his style is unique.
Title of art work: Alley by the lake Artist: Afremov Size: 24"x36" x 3/4" Date: 04/17/2009 Location: Europe Technique and Medium: The work was done using original oil on canvas with palette-knife for painting Reviewer: OBADOTE ESTHER OLUWABUNMI 09BE08967 Subject Matter: it represents the beauty of nature. It also describes the joy you can derive in the dark even if it’s scary. Brief Description: The painting describes the natural coolness of the atmosphere just after the rain. It also emphasises the beauty that is in the night, and it’s been shown by the street lights (street lights can only be that bright when it’s dark). It also tells the relationship between the natural and the artificial, i.e., when the weather is getting dark and the streets light are on, it neutrally change the colours of the trees and its leaves. And finally, it speaks the beauty of nature, Form: It’s a two dimensional work of art showing its depth and through the use of shade, light and shadow, perspectives (the farther you go, the bigger it becomes], horizon or artist eye level (the imaginary line where the earth tends to meet the sky). And it creates an illusion of depth, width and length with no height behind a flat surface. It also shows the treatment of the effect of light and shade with the tones of the colour which is called chiaroscuro. Art Elements: Line: straight (the pole of the street light), curve (the trees and human), Shape: angle (across the horizon), circle (the bulb Light and Value: the colour is even with lots of shade Colour: the three primary colours (red, yellow and blue) were used and some other cool colours to signify the colour of nature. Texture and Pattern: the texture can’t be felt, but it has a little bit of pattern which was exhibited with the repetition of the street lights and trees. Space: there is the use of linear perspective which is clearly shown by the light that passes from the scene through an imaginary angle (the painting). Under this, there is also the foreshortening which is seen in the reduction of the shapes as it gets farther. There is also the overlapping between the trees and also between the trees and the sky. CONCLUSION The work as said earlier is a very good blend between the nature and the artificial. The colour blend was also excellent. He was able paint the night with a fairly light colour. Although, following his other works, he has indirectly repeated scenes but in a different angle. But I must confess that the illusion the work creates is a very wonderful one. I love it.
